Information concerning the clients of Salt Spring Hospice Society (SSHS) and their families is privileged and confidential. All clients and their family members have a right to privacy and confidentiality regarding their health and personal matters and all volunteers and staff have a responsibility to respect that right.
As a volunteer of SSHS, I agree to adhere to this confidentiality agreement and I accept the following policies in accordance with confidentiality laws and ethics.
Confidentiality:
I will keep confidential all information that I receive about SSHS clients, their families, staff members, volunteers and contractors. I will not record any identifying information about clients. If, when speaking with other team members, I need to refer to the client I will use the client’s first initial. Any identifying information I relay to other volunteers and staff about clients will be done strictly on a need-to-know basis and with the consent of the client. If I have the clients consent and need to relay Identifying information to another volunteer or staff member I will do so in-person. All parties involved must be included in any discussion regarding exceptions to confidentiality and I will consult with SSHS staff about any clarification I require to adhere to this policy.
Anonymity:
I will respect the right to privacy of clients and their families by not identifying them as SSHS clients in any public setting. I will not ask them for information they are unwilling to impart. I will respect the privacy of other volunteers, staff, and contractors by not identifying them or sharing any information about them without their consent.
I recognize that any breach of this agreement could result in the termination of my position as a volunteer with SSHS.
